The Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco has announced the publication of a new book titled “La Convivencia en Al-Andalus,” compiling the proceedings of the international symposium held in Rabat from November 29 to December 1.
Published in the Coloquios series in both Spanish and Arabic, the volume represents a major scientific contribution to the study of intercultural dialogue and coexistence in Andalusian history, the Academy said in a statement.
The work sheds light on the richness of the Andalusian experience, a symbol of peaceful coexistence among Muslims, Christians, and Jews.
In his foreword, Abdeljalil Lahjomri, the Academy’s Permanent Secretary, highlights that Andalusian society was marked by its cultural and human diversity, giving rise to a unique model of coexistence in world history.
Organized under the Academy’s Al-Andalus Chair, the symposium gathered distinguished scholars from Morocco, Spain, and across Europe.
Discussions centered on four main themes: “The Concept of Convivencia and Its Theoretical Dimensions,” “Coexistence in History, Literature, and Language,” “The Human and Civilizational Dimension of Living Together,” and “Links Between Coexistence and Contemporary Society.”
The book underscores that medieval Andalusia served as an exceptional laboratory of intercultural dialogue, where Arab-Muslim, Judeo-Spanish, and Christian traditions met and enriched one another.
Beyond its historical scope, “La Convivencia en Al-Andalus” highlights the enduring relevance of the Andalusian ideal, a vision of coexistence grounded in tolerance, mutual respect, and the acknowledgment of differences.
This new publication reaffirms the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco’s role as a central actor in cultural diplomacy and interreligious dialogue, reminding readers that the spirit of convivencia is not merely a relic of the past, but a living message for the present and the future.
