Fez — “One Battle After Another” is leading the 2026 Golden Globes race with nine nominations, more than any other film in contention this year.
The showing confirms the new Paul Thomas Anderson feature as a central player in awards season and strengthens its chances heading toward the Oscars.
A political thriller with a personal core
Released in September 2025, “One Battle After Another” is a dark comedy action thriller written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. The film follows an ex-revolutionary who is forced back into his former life when he and his daughter are targeted by a corrupt military officer, blending political tension with a family story at its core.
The cast is led by Leonardo DiCaprio, with Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, and Chase Infiniti in key roles. The movie is Anderson’s most expensive production to date and has also become the highest-grossing film of his career, with global box office takings crossing $200 million.
Critics have highlighted the film’s mix of large-scale set pieces and character-driven scenes, and several international outlets have already named it among the best films of 2025.
Nine nominations across major categories
At the Golden Globes, “One Battle After Another” tops the film field with nine nominations. It is competing for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and brings Paul Thomas Anderson nominations for both Best Director and Best Screenplay, placing him at the center of the directing and writing races.
Leonardo DiCaprio is nominated for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, while Chase Infiniti earns a nod for Best Actress in the same category. Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn both appear in the Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture category, and Teyana Taylor is recognised in Best Supporting Actress. Composer Jonny Greenwood rounds out the list with a nomination for Best Original Score.
This spread makes “One Battle After Another” one of the rare films to appear in so many major branches at once, from picture and director to several acting categories and music.
Standing out in a crowded field
The film leads a competitive slate that includes Norwegian drama “Sentimental Value” with eight nominations and “Sinners” with seven, while other titles such as “Frankenstein,” “Hamnet,” “The Secret Agent,” “Blue Moon,” and “Nouvelle Vague” fill out the drama and musical/comedy categories.
Even in that crowded field, “One Battle After Another” appears as the clear frontrunner on the strength of its nomination count and its performance with critics’ groups and industry awards so far.
A key marker for awards season
The 83rd Golden Globes, set for January 11, mark the first major stop on the film awards calendar. Leading the nominations does not guarantee wins, but it signals broad support among voters and can shape momentum ahead of the Oscars.
For “One Battle After Another,” the nine nominations confirm more than just popularity. They show that voters are responding to the film as a complete work, from Anderson’s direction and script to the ensemble cast and Greenwood’s score. As awards season moves forward, it will be the film many others are measured against.
