Fez — Netflix has revealed the first look at “Scooby-Doo: Origins,” its upcoming live-action series about the early days of the Mystery Inc. gang.
The short teaser shows Scooby running through the woods near a summer camp before meeting Shaggy, setting up the friendship that will become the heart of the franchise. The series is now filming in Atlanta and is expected to premiere globally on Netflix in 2027.
The biggest twist is Scooby himself. For the first time in the franchise’s history, the character will be played by a real Great Dane rather than appearing only through animation or CGI. The first images have already sparked heavy reactions online, with many fans calling the puppy adorable while others debate how a real dog can carry such an iconic cartoon role.
A new origin story for Mystery Inc.
“Scooby-Doo: Origins” brings the gang back to the beginning. The story follows Shaggy and Daphne during their final summer at camp, where they become involved in a haunting mystery surrounding a lost Great Dane puppy who may have witnessed a supernatural murder.
Velma enters the story as a pragmatic, science-minded townie, while Fred appears as a strange but handsome new kid. Together, they begin solving a case that pulls each of them into a creepy nightmare and threatens to expose their secrets.
The cast includes Tanner Hagen as Shaggy, Mckenna Grace as Daphne, Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma, and Maxwell Jenkins as Fred. Paul Walter Hauser is also attached as a series regular. Netflix’s Tudum notes that the new series is based on the Hanna-Barbera characters and focuses on the terrifying first case that brings Mystery Inc. together.
The creative team includes Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg as writers, showrunners, and executive producers. Warner Bros. Television is producing the series with Berlanti Productions and Midnight Radio, while Toby Haynes will direct and executive produce the first episode.
The attention around the first look shows how much nostalgia still surrounds “Scooby-Doo.” The franchise has spent decades moving through cartoons, movies, spin-offs, memes, and reboots, but this version is selling something specific: a darker, younger, camp-set mystery built around the first bond between Shaggy and Scooby.
With a real puppy at the center and a horror-leaning origin story around him, “Scooby-Doo: Origins” is trying to balance cuteness, nostalgia, and supernatural tension. That mix is exactly why the first look is already moving fast online before the series even reaches Netflix.
