Rabat – The cultural center of Tamesna held a celebration on Saturday for the International Day of Theater, with the Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication, Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid, attending the event.
The festivities were also attended by various writers, directors, actors, and producers in the Moroccan theater industry.
Actresses Zineb Ennajem and Amal Benhaddou were honored during the ceremony. A performance of the classic play “Dar Sidi Kaddour” was also put on by the city’s theater troupe.
Peter Sellars, an American theater director, wrote a letter for the occasion, which was read out loud to the event’s crowd.
In his speech, the culture minister stressed the urgency of reviving Morocco’s cultural life and noted especially that the country’s theater sector was in dire need of evolving. evolve.
“This year’s international day of theater had to be celebrated in this way, considering the circumstances of the last two years and closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” Bensaid said.
The minister talked about the social problems that are facing workers in the theater sector, adding that there is now an organization being formed to resolve such problems.
As the world is starting to see a relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions, many in creative fields have been hoping for a return to normalcy, with crowds being allowed to attend plays and films again.
Bensaid has previously said that the ministry is constructing about 70 halls, and aims to provide 150 theater halls for artists by the end of this year.
