Rabat – Despite having the world’s highest overall score for solo travelers, Morocco is not among the top 10 best countries for female solo travelers, according to the 2022 solo travel index issued by the British sports insurance company SportsCover Direct.

The index took into consideration “the number of solo tours, the % of five-star hotels, and the % of five-star activities on TripAdvisor.”

Morocco notably has the world’s fourth-highest number of solo tours estimated at 993. Only Egypt with 1,040 tours, Italy with 1,125 tours, and India with 3,047 tours outranked the North African kingdom on that particular metric.

Morocco further recorded in the index a relatively high percentage of 5-star hotels (42.09%) and the world’s highest percentage of 5-star activities (52.53%), which qualified it to be a favorable destination for solo travelers with a score of 29.1 out of 30.

Greece, India, the United States, and South Africa followed Morocco in the global ranking. Italy came 6th in the global ranking with an overall score of 27.7 out of 30 despite having the highest % of 5-star hotels at 69.18% and the second-largest number of solo tours estimated at 1,125.

But Morocco did not make it to the top 10 list of best countries for female solo travelers. Meanwhile, its northern neighbor, Spain, topped the global ranking in that category with a safety score of 212.04 and an overall score of 47.4 over 50.

The safety score is of great importance since recent studies, quoted by the index, have found that there is an increasing tendency among millennials to prefer solo traveling (58%) while nearly 50% of women consider safety concerns the main obstacle stopping them from traveling alone.

Taking such concerns into consideration, European countries seem to be best for female solo travelers, in addition to Canada and Singapore which came 7th and 8th in the list of top 10 best countries for female solo travelers.

Ireland came second in the ranking ahead of Austria, Portugal, Croatia, and Switzerland. Norway and France ended up in the last two spots in the top 10 list.

While coming last in the top 10 rankings, France received the highest safety score of 309.92. Yet, its lower offers of solo tours and percentage of 5 star hotels and activities compared to other countries resulted in its downgrading in the global ranking.
