Rabat – From minimalistic looks and casual class to the vintage fashion era, we have seen various shifts in the young generation’s style. Vividly portrayed in modern television shows and short videos on TikTok, a new genre is being introduced to the fashion scene. While some may describe it as “chaotic” and “ugly chic,” style experts believe it to be a movement radiating power, confidence, and individualism.

Taking over social media platforms, the recent aesthetic defies the popular saying “less is more” but confidently expresses “enough is never enough,” promoting a new shade of maximalism. The style features a selection of mismatched patterns, bold shades, and kitschy accessories.

Not only restricted to the media world, but the new chic is also heavily embraced by the most influential celebrities such as the soft girl trend donned by stars like Bella Hadid, the off-duty model look with Kendall Jenner, and the insanely creative outfits by young fashion influencers.

Heavily inspired by “Y2K”, a style that dominated the mid-1990s and early 2000s fashion scene. The aesthetic channels a futuristic aura with a vintage touch. Chunky sneakers, wide-leg jeans, and baguette bags are only a few staples from the era.

It is very common for fashion to reemerge with a twist, and y2k is no exception.

Rejecting the traditional fashion formula and heavy concepts, style experts believe this movement is a way to break free from all the rules and enjoy clothes regardless of if they coordinate or not. It is a reminder that life is a party and that you should feel free to explore your likes and dislikes.

In a move to promote sustainability and let go of overconsumption, the style relies heavily on rare vintage finds, upcycling, and purchasing second-hand items. Taking the resale market by storm, the younger generation is visibly very conscious and values social change. It is the case for the resale e-shop Depop, today, 90% of Depop’s users are under 26 years old. Fortunately, gen-Z is pressuring the fashion industry to change its codes and evolve towards a more eco-friendly and sustainable environment.
