Rabat – Germany is expected to celebrate Eid Al Fitr 2023 on Friday, April 21, according to German outlet Augsburger Allgemeine.
Eid Al Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, with Muslims celebrating with huge breakfasts full of culture-specific and traditional food and drinks. The centrality of food in the celebrations has led the holiday to be nicknamed “the Sugar Festival” in some countries, Germany included.
The day begins with a special Eid prayer, traditionally held in open air temporary mosques called “Musalla.” They are followed by a special religious sermon called the “khutba.”
The occasion is also characterized by the spirit of giving, as Muslims are obligated to give away a set amount of money to the benefit of the underprivileged.
Kids often also received gifts for the occasion, with new clothes and toys being the most popular. It is also tradition to give them monetary rewards for the Eid.
As with all other Muslim holidays, the exact date of Eid Al Fitr is determined once the crescent moon of the new month is observed, leading the date to change from year to year.
Most countries are forecast to celebrate the feast on Friday this year, with a few others like Morocco expecting to celebrate on Saturday.
