Rabat – American magazine Conde Nast Traveler has placed the Moroccan capital Rabat on its list of African destinations to explore in 2024.

Noting that the city is often overshadowed by its imperial counterparts like Marrakech and Fez, the report anticipates that Rabat will steal the spotlight in 2024 with a wave of “cultural and artistic reinvention.”

The magazine highlighted the city’s cultural and artistic dynamism, saying it boasts a mix of cool music festivals, unique architecture, and luxurious accommodations.

The report notably highlighted the city’s much-anticipated Mohammed VI Tower, a structure designed to achieve LEED Gold and HQE certification. The tower is set to become the tallest and only spire of its kind in Africa.

In addition, the magazine highlighted the buzz surrounding the Grand Theatre of Rabat, which will be opening soon.

“One of legendary architect Zaha Hadid’s unfinished masterpieces, it will incorporate an 1,800-seat theater, an experimental performance space, and a 7,000-person amphitheater, along with green spaces and a restaurant,” said the travel magazine.

The theater is poised to become the largest cultural venue in both Africa and the Arab world, hosting a variety of performing arts, including symphony, ballet, opera, and philharmonic showcases.

The report also underlined the 2024 return of the Mawazine festival, after a years-long hiatus following the COVID-19 pandemic.

The magazine recalled the festival’s past track record of attracting A-listers such as Rihanna, and Mariah Carey, among others.

The festival, known as Africa’s largest, is expected to once again captivate audiences with its diverse musical offerings.
