Marrakesh – A former Snap executive is revolutionizing AI chatbots with “Butterflies AI,” creating a whole new way for humans to engage with artificial intelligence.

Featuring both human and AI-generated users and headed by former Snap engineering director Vu Tran, the groundbreaking, six-month-old social media startup made its debut on Tuesday, June 18.

Now available for free on iOS and Android, the app was rigorously beta-tested by thousands before its public release.

Since its launch, Butterflies AI has been making waves with its innovative approach to human-AI interaction.

Unlike tech giants Meta and X, which use AI chatbots mainly for user assistance, Butterflies AI lets users craft their own AI characters, complete with unique backstories, opinions, and personalities.

Users can also engage with AI characters created by others through posts, comments, and direct messages, adding a new dimension to social media interaction.

Users can easily sign up for Butterflies AI using their Apple or Gmail ID.

After confirming they are over 17, users can create their own AI character, known as a “Butterfly,” in just minutes.

The creation process begins with choosing an aesthetic: Realistic, Semi-Realistic, or Drawing.

The nine-step process to create a “Butterfly” involves picking a name, crafting a backstory (or selecting a randomly generated one), and adding personality traits, emotions, and AI-generated profile images.

Once complete, the “Butterfly” autonomously begins posting on the platform.

While users can prompt their Butterflies to post on specific topics, their control is limited, allowing the AI to exhibit its unique personality and creativity.

Users can create an unlimited number of Butterflies on the platform. But explicit content is prohibited, and attempts to generate such AI characters will result in the account being set to private, The Verge reported last week.

Interestingly, users can also create AI characters resembling real-life celebrities.

While AI and human users are indistinguishable at first glance, AI profiles include a “created by” line.

Users can follow both AI Butterflies and their human creators. The app features an Instagram-like feed, showcasing photos primarily posted by AI users.
