Beni Mellal – The Moroccan film “Moroccan Badass Girl” (original title: “Marrokiya Harra”), directed by Hicham Lasri, has topped the list of most-watched Moroccan films on Netflix, just days after its release, surpassing several foreign productions.

The film, aimed at audiences over 13 years old, has garnered significant viewership and sparked both positive and negative reactions.

“Moroccan Badass Girl” tells the story of Khadija, nicknamed “Cathy,” a Moroccan woman in her thirties who faces mistreatment from her family and work environment.

Despite her dire circumstances, Khadija refuses to give up on her dreams or submit to social exploitation and the patriarchal society.

On her 30th birthday, she recalls memories of the harshness of her familial and professional surroundings, as well as life in general.

A skillful combination of black comedy and sarcasm, the movie offers a satirical and comedic portrayal of a character experiencing the worst day of her life.

The film contains harsh aspects that force society to witness hidden things. It discusses strange events occurring in Casablanca that bring the dead back to life, while also touching on existing and emerging phenomena in Moroccan society, attempting to provide a glimpse into the future.

The story revolves around a society where individuals await things to happen without striving for them, desiring an easy life free from troubles, and dreaming of prosperity or fame without working hard to achieve their goals.

Critics and viewers celebrated the film’s success on social media platforms, following the large audience turnout that accompanied its Netflix release.

Fadoua Taleb, the film’s lead actress, shared a post on her official Instagram account announcing that the film had topped the list of the 10 most-watched films on Netflix Morocco. Director Hicham Lasri also shared the news on his social media accounts.

Despite fierce competition on the platform in terms of film screenings and reception, “Moroccan Badass Girl” achieved high viewership and managed to top the list of most-watched films.

The film stars Fadoua Taleb, Salah Bensalah, Ayoub Abounnasr, Malek Akhmis, and Mounia Lamkimel.

This is not the first time that one of Hicham Lasri’s films has achieved a high rank in the Moroccan film scene, as he has previously won several Arab and international awards.

His films continue to be watched, critiqued, and celebrated worldwide due to their aesthetic value and artistic peculiarities in the search for a cinematic language that appears largely unique to him.
