An icon of Indian cinema, her presence reminded everyone that stories aren’t just told – they’re embodied, lived, and shared with the world.

Marrakech – India’s Zoya Akhtar graced the 21st edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival as a jury member, offering insight into the power of cinema.

In an interview with MAP, Akhtar stressed the importance of approaching films without preset expectations, urging audiences to “open their heart and mind” when watching.

This, she argued, is key to allowing a film to truly make a connection.

Every film in the official selection represents a chance to explore stories from diverse regions and cultures, each one holding the potential to stir deep emotions within the viewer.

As she reflects on the festival’s impact, Zoya also highlighted the invaluable experience it offers young filmmakers.

“Participating in such a festival is a rich experience,” she explained, calling it a “unique opportunity” for emerging directors to showcase their work, defend it before an international audience, and interact with industry professionals.

For Akhtar, events like the Marrakech Festival create a platform that transcends borders, where filmmakers can meet producers, distributors, and fellow creators, paving the way for future opportunities.
