Moroccan cinema has reached milestones this year, with the organizers naming the country as guest of honor – another testament to its growing global recognition.
Fez- Moroccan feature film “Triple-A” by Jihane El Bahhar won first prize at the Brussels International Film Festival, which took place in Dakar, Senegal, from December 3 to 7.
The film, which interweaves the love stories of three marginalized characters whose lives cross in unexpected ways, also won two major awards: “Best Screenplay” and “Best Actor” for the great performance of Aziz Dadas.
Apart from “Triple A”, which opened the festival, two other Moroccan productions were competing in the international category: “Amira” – the short film by Rachida Saadi, and the documentary “Cubarouis” (Morocco-Cuba) directed by Aziz Khouadir.
Shot during quarantine, “Amira” is a film about the story of a seemingly serene family whose lives take a sharp turn.
Amira and Karam lead a routine life with their daughter Sonia. While Amira dreams of starting work to contribute to the buying of an apartment, Karam grows suspicious over his wife hiding money, conspires with her lover, and catches her red-handed in infidelity.
The 9th edition of the festival was rich in programming and diversity, showcasing the vision and creativity of African and Belgian filmmakers.
During the five days, the audience was able to discover a choice of films that reflected the vibrant dynamism of Pan-African cinema.
According to a local press, the organizers said that Dakar, with its cultural dynamism, was the ideal setting to celebrate this anniversary edition and promote Pan-African cinema in Belgium and elsewhere.
The festival nominees competed under three categories: International Films, Young Talents, and Documentaries. The event also had an array of workshops, forums, and discussions on contemporary challenges in the film industry.
This year’s event marked an important chapter in the festival’s history, bringing cultures closer and encouraging dialogue through the universal language of cinema.
