Under the dim glow of Casablanca’s Villa des Arts, a collection of vivid masterpieces whispers stories of tradition and transformation, waiting to be discovered.

Fez – Yesterday, Casablanca’s Villa des Arts came alive with the vibrant energy of Moroccan art enthusiasts, as the much-anticipated exhibition “Fatna Gbouri: Between Tradition and Modernity” officially opened its doors.

Fondation AL MADA, in collaboration with Art First Galerie, organized this exhibition in honor of the life and work of Fatna Gbouri, one of Morocco’s pioneering fe  male painters.

It showcases a collection that has never before been displayed to the public in Casablanca.

The exhibition, curated by Selma Naguib, features Gbouri’s works from 1982 to 1990—a pivotal period in her artistic journey.

These pieces were previously displayed at the Musée des Confluences-Dar El Bacha in Marrakech during 2023 and 2024.

Still, their presentation in Casablanca offers a fresh opportunity for audiences to engage with her distinctive vision.

Fatna Gbouri’s story is as extraordinary as her art. Born in 1924 in Tnine Gharbia, Safi Province, she began painting at the age of 58, joining the ranks of self-taught artists like the renowned Chaibia Talal.

Gbouri’s work is part of the singular art movement, also known as Post-Brut or autodidact art, characterized by its raw, unpolished authenticity and emotional depth.

The opening night drew a diverse crowd, from seasoned art collectors to curious newcomers, all eager to immerse themselves in Gbouri’s world.

At the vernissage, Naguib described Gbouri’s unique ability to bridge tradition and modernity through her art.

“Fatna Gbouri transcends generations. She is a pioneer who combined authenticity with a forward-looking vision, creating works that continue to resonate deeply with audiences today,” Naguib said.

Gbouri’s paintings transport viewers to the heart of Moroccan life, depicting scenes of rural weddings, births, and celebrations.

Her vivid use of color and bold brushstrokes bring these moments to life, capturing not only their visual beauty but also their emotional essence.

“Her work is a testament to the timeless charm of Morocco’s cultural heritage,” noted Olivier Rachet, who wrote the introductory text for the exhibition catalog. “Her colors sing, and her lines convey an unfiltered joy that invites the viewer into her world.”

The works on display are notable for their spontaneity and richness. Gbouri uses primary colors laid flat to create a striking visual rhythm.

Her art feels both deeply personal and universally relatable, drawing from her own experiences while offering a broader reflection of Moroccan society.

Visitors to the exhibition are treated to an intimate exploration of Moroccan identity. The curated selection emphasizes the harmony between the traditional and the modern, offering a glimpse into a culture that is constantly evolving yet rooted in its heritage.

Running until March 31, 2025, “Fatna Gbouri: Between Tradition and Modernity” is an unmissable event for anyone interested in Moroccan art and culture.

For those who missed the artistic atmosphere of the opening night, the exhibition promises a rich and reflective journey through Gbouri’s legacy.

The Villa des Arts in Casablanca, with its serene ambiance and commitment to promoting Moroccan art, serves as the perfect venue to honor Gbouri’s contributions to the art world.

As the exhibition unfolds over the coming weeks, it will undoubtedly continue to inspire and captivate audiences from Morocco and beyond.
