Two artists, two visions, one poetic journey.
Marrakech – Opening on January 30, 2025, “La Conférence des Oiseaux”, the latest exhibition at La Galerie 38 in Marrakech, brings together Moroccan painter Mohamed Hamidi and South African conceptual artist Kendell Geers for an exploration of transformation, spirituality, and the search for meaning.
Inspired by the 12th-century Persian poem “The Conference of the Birds” by Attar of Nishapur, the exhibition unfolds like a mystical quest.
In the original poem, a gathering of birds embarks on a journey to find their ultimate king, the Simurgh, only to realize that the divine they seek is within them all along.
This exhibition mirrors that profound journey, using the visual language of two distinct yet complementary artistic voices.
Hamidi’s birds, vibrant and abstract, evoke a sense of freedom and transcendence.
Their fluid forms and luminous colors suggest an unrestrained pursuit of light — both literal and spiritual.
Like the Simurgh of Attar’s tale, they symbolize the eternal quest for self-discovery, rising beyond material constraints toward something greater.
In contrast, Geers’ flowers offer a layered dialogue between beauty and resistance.
Each petal becomes a statement, a reflection on history, memory, and the struggles of the African continent.
His works, shaped by his concept of AniMystiKActivism, blend myth, politics, and spirituality, turning delicate blooms into symbols of resilience and renewal.
Together, Hamidi and Geers create a space where abstraction meets symbolism, where the personal intersects with the political.
Their works invite viewers to contemplate the invisible threads connecting nature, identity, and transformation.
La Conférence des Oiseaux is an invitation to reflect, to dream, and to embrace the ever-changing nature of existence.
