While the circumstances of Duo’s death remain a mystery, his legacy as the internet’s most persistent language coach will not be forgotten.
Marrakech – The rumors are true — Duolingo’s beloved mascot, known for his playful antics and relentless reminders, has passed away.
On Tuesday, the language-learning app announced that its make-believe mascot, Duo the Owl, had mysteriously died.
The cause of death remains undetermined.
“It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved mascot, Duo the Owl,” a Duolingo said in a statement.
“For years, he tirelessly reminded millions to do their language lessons − sometimes with gentle nudges, sometimes with sheer, unhinged persistence. But even the most relentless of birds can only take so much.”
Duolingo addressed the situation on social media, confirming that Duo’s death is under investigation.
In a follow-up post shared on X, the company cryptically stated, “We’re currently investigating Jimmy,” but provided no further details.
“We’re aware he had many enemies,” Duolingo said in jest.
“Tbh (to be honest), he probably died waiting for you to do your lesson, but what do we know.”
The company continued the lighthearted approach, jokingly asking users to “share their credit card number ‘so we can automatically sign you up for Duolingo Max in his memory.’”
A spokesperson later confirmed this was a joke and advised users not to disclose their payment details.
To further commemorate Duo’s passing, Duolingo shared a TikTok video on Tuesday featuring its characters Lily and Zari — familiar faces from the app’s lessons — carrying Duo’s coffin.
The video ends with the coffin being placed in the bed of a pickup truck and driven away, adding to the dramatic yet humorous farewell.
