Marrakech – Amazon has submitted a bid to acquire TikTok, according to a Trump administration official on Wednesday.
This move comes just days before a US ban on the popular video-sharing platform is scheduled to take effect on Saturday.
The official, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, revealed that Amazon’s offer was made in a letter addressed to Vice President JD Vance and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
President Donald Trump granted TikTok a temporary reprieve on Inauguration Day, bypassing a law that had been unanimously upheld by the Supreme Court, which stated that a ban on the platform was essential for national security.
The law mandates that TikTok’s Chinese-owned parent company, ByteDance, must either sell the platform to an approved buyer or take it offline in the United States.
While Trump has suggested the ban could be further postponed, he has also indicated that he expects a deal to be reached by Saturday.
Amazon has declined to comment on the bid, and TikTok has not yet responded to a request for comment.
The revelation of Amazon’s offer came as Trump was set to meet with senior officials on Wednesday to discuss the approaching deadline for TikTok’s sale.
