Rabat- On July 13, Elmo’s X account, which is one of Sesame Workshop’s iconic characters, was hacked by an outside party and posted a highly disturbing string including antisemetic and racist language.
The posts were soon deleted and by Monday, Sesame Workshop was able to regain access with further security measures added.
Sesame released a statement three days after the incident occurred, apologizing and emphasizing that no one from Sesame Street or Sesame Workshop were involved in the mishap.
“We strongly condemn the abhorrent antisemetic and racist content, and the account has since been secured,” posted Sesame Workshop and Elmo on both accounts.
Elmo’s followers soon took notice of what the puppet was specifically apologizing about and what was left out.
Extensive commentary has risen regarding there being no regret nor acknowledgment of the hackers posts directed to President Donald Trump and the federal government.
One of the tense posts concerned Jeffrey Epstein and his ongoing sex trafficking investigation as the hacker called on President Trump to “release the files.”
The message was posted after the US Department of Justice and FBI claimed to have found no evidence of a list that could include high-profile names affiliated with Epstein.
The disrupting messages were a major shock to all 680.6k followers of Elmo’s account who engage on the X platform for the encouraging words of the forever 3-year-old muppet, not offensive or controversial remarks.
The account has been running since 2012 and has gained lots of attention the past few years. For example, Former US President Joe Biden reacting to the viral X post “Elmo is just checking in! How is everybody doing?”
Elon Musk has yet to make a comment.
A rise in racist, antisemetic, and overall hate speech has occurred since 2022 when the platform was passed over to billionaire Musk.
