Marrakech – The up-and-coming Egregore Festival is back for its second edition, marking 40 years of hip-hop in Morocco with a massive two-day event on July 26 and 27 in the heart of Casablanca.
This year’s festival brings together an impressive lineup of 40 Moroccan rappers, headlined by major names like ElGrande Toto, L’morphine, Khtek, Dizzy Dros, MADD, and many more artists who’ve helped shape the scene.
Egregore will also feature breakdancing shows, graffiti art, and DJ sets, creating a fully immersive experience that pays tribute to the pillars of hip-hop culture.
The inspiration behind the festival is rooted in history. The event’s symbolic concept came after German-Moroccan DJ and music archivist Habibi Funk discovered a rare hip-hop recording attributed to Faddoul titled “Wordy Rapping Hood”.
Believed to have been released around 1985, the track is considered one of the first Moroccan hip-hop songs ever recorded.
As the track turns 40 in 2025, organizers saw the perfect moment to honor its legacy through this cultural showcase.
The celebration of Moroccan rap didn’t happen in a vacuum. The country’s hip-hop scene has seen a meteoric rise in recent years — most notably with ElGrande Toto’s groundbreaking performance at the OLM Souissi stage during the Mawazine Festival, making him the first Moroccan artist to perform on that stage.
That show reportedly drew a record-breaking 400,000 fans, a milestone widely celebrated within the local scene.
