Rabat – 23-time Grand Slam champion, Serena Williams, recently revealed she used a GLP-1 weight-loss medication after struggling to shed post-pregnancy pounds through diet and exercise alone.
Despite her elite fitness routine, she couldn’t return to a healthy weight after giving birth. That’s when she turned to GLP-1 treatment, accessed through telehealth provider Ro, and has since lost over 14 kilograms, an effort she describes as empowering, not speeding or cutting corners.
The weight loss wasn’t just physical. In a relaxed Instagram photoshoot wearing a bright yellow swimsuit, Serene wrote, “melanin mellow-yellow,” capturing her renewed confidence following the treatment. She emphasizes that while the scale may have changed, her self-image and self-worth remain rooted in self-love.
Serena also addressed the stigma surrounding GLP-1 drugs. In an interview on “Today Show”, she framed her journey as responsible self-care, backed by research and medical guidance. She emphasized that needing extra help doesn’t diminish effort, especially when traditional methods hit a plateau.
In her candid Vogue interview, she discussed the challenges of regaining her pre-motherhood physique.
“There’s a scene in my HBO documentary where you see my coach telling me, ‘You have to lose weight,’ but it was so hard after I had Olympia. I was literally on the court every day, doing nothing else. I had been the ultimate super-athlete, always in competition and being super-healthy my entire life, but I just could never get back to where I needed to be, no matter what I did.”
That’s when she chose to try something different, a GLP-1 medication delivered straight through Ro.
Now, Serena is going beyond her own journey. She’s become a celebrity patient ambassador for Ro, openly advocating for transparent conversations around weight, postpartum struggles, and body image, especially for mothers who feel the pressure.
Her honesty has struck a chord with fans who applauded her bravery and praised her for opening the door to broader dialogue about health, wellness, and self-acceptance.
“The courage of @serenawilliams will serve as a pivotal moment in the changing of the narrative around meds,” said a user on X.
Some others pushed back on social media. “Seeing THE Serena Williams being used to sell weight loss products feels like an insult to everything Serena Williams represents, stands for, and has achieved, even if she herself or her team doesn’t feel that way,” another one wrote.
Moreover, William’s revelation has also sparked speculation online. Some fans noted that her husband, Alexis Ohanian, is a Ro investor. This has raised questions about whether there could be a conflict of interest, and quickly expanded into debates about money, influence, and transparency.
