Marrakech – The Zurich Film Festival was the stage for the world premiere of “Desert Warrior,” an epic action drama hailed as Saudi Arabia’s first true global film, with a staggering budget of $150 million (around MAD 1.5 billion).

Directed by Rupert Wyatt, best known for “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” the production unfolded across the sweeping deserts of NEOM and Tabuk.

Over 600 crew members from 40 nationalities came together to bring the ambitious project to life, marking a milestone for the Saudi film industry.

The star-studded cast blends Hollywood heavyweights and Arab talent alike: Anthony Mackie, Sir Ben Kingsley, Aiysha Hart, Ghassan Massoud, and Sharlto Copley share the screen with rising Arab stars such as Lamis Ammar and Nabil Al Wahabi.

Set in the 7th century, the film follows Princess Hind as she escapes Emperor Khosrow and emerges as the leader of the legendary Battle of Dhi Qar – a turning point in Arab history. Mackie plays Hanzala, a mysterious thief who becomes her unlikely ally in the struggle.

Unlike many modern epics, Desert Warrior opted for raw authenticity; real desert landscapes, horses, and camels took center stage over heavy CGI.

For the cast, the project was more than just another film. “This was a chance to reconnect with my Saudi roots,” said Aiysha Hart.

Anthony Mackie echoed the sentiment, sharing that the energy of the local team “rekindled his passion for acting.”

Backed by Saudi Arabia’s Film Commission and the Quality of Life program, and produced by MBC Studios and JB Pictures, “Desert Warrior” represents a landmark moment, not only for Saudi cinema but for Arab storytelling on the global stage.
