Marrakech – The Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco in Azerbaijan celebrated yesterday a landmark moment for Moroccan culture: the inscription of “the art, tradition, and craftsmanship of the Moroccan caftan” on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Marking this historic recognition, the Embassy hosted a Moroccan fashion show under the theme “The Moroccan Caftan: Heritage, Elegance & Living Art” at the Residence of Morocco in Baku.

The event showcased around thirty creations by two distinguished Moroccan couturiers: Morocco-based Wafaa Idrissi Haute Couture and Bahrain-headquartered Naseem AlAndalos.

Each designer brought a unique artistic vision to the runway, illustrating the global presence and influence of Moroccan talent.

Through this showcase, the Embassy honored both national and international designers, celebrating their role in preserving and evolving the Moroccan caftan while promoting its worldwide recognition.

Guests included prominent figures from the Azerbaijani fashion industry, members of the diplomatic corps, government officials, artists, media representatives, and friends of Moroccan culture.

Attendees were offered an immersive experience into the rich symbolism and intricate craftsmanship of the Moroccan caftan, a living testament to centuries of skill, tradition, and cultural identity.

Through luxurious fabrics, delicate embroidery, and refined silhouettes, the caftan continues to represent Morocco’s artistic heritage and the creativity of contemporary designers.

The fashion show also reinforced Morocco’s cultural diplomacy in Azerbaijan, reflecting the vision of King Mohammed VI, which emphasizes heritage preservation, intercultural dialogue, and international outreach.

Earlier this year, the visit of Princess Lalla Hasnaa, President of the Foundation for the Safeguarding of the Cultural Heritage of Rabat, to Baku further strengthened cultural cooperation between the two countries and reaffirmed Morocco’s commitment to promoting its heritage globally.

During the ceremony, the Ambassador of the King highlighted the historical depth of the Moroccan caftan, its evolution across dynasties, and its enduring place as a symbol of elegance.

He also paid tribute to the artisans and designers whose dedication has preserved this living heritage across generations, noting its international reach and continued inspiration for global fashion houses.
