Fez — American tour operators surveyed by the United States Tour Operators Association (USTOA) have ranked Morocco as the second most attractive off-the-beaten-path destination to visit in 2026.

The USTOA revealed the ranking during its annual conference, which it held from December 1 to 5 in Maryland. The results are based on an annual survey conducted among the association’s members, offering a forward-looking snapshot of travel trends and emerging destinations for the coming year.

Morocco stands out among emerging travel choices

While classic destinations such as Italy, France, and Japan continue to dominate mainstream international travel rankings, USTOA members also published a separate list highlighting destinations considered less conventional yet increasingly appealing. Portugal took first place in that category, followed closely by Morocco, with Croatia and Colombia ranking next. Malta, Vietnam, and Ireland jointly rounded out the top five.

The result positions Morocco as a destination that balances accessibility with discovery, appealing to travelers seeking experiences beyond well-trodden tourist routes. From mountain regions to desert landscapes and historic cities, the country continues to benefit from its geographic and cultural diversity.

A broader picture of 2026 travel trends

On the domestic US front, Hawaii topped the list of most popular American destinations for 2026, followed by national parks, Alaska, California, and New York. Internationally, Italy led the rankings, ahead of France, Japan, Portugal, and Greece, reflecting continued demand for established cultural and leisure destinations.

Morocco’s placement in the off-the-beaten-path category suggests a shift in perception among US travel professionals, who increasingly view the country as both distinctive and adaptable to evolving traveler expectations.

From snowy mountains to cultural depth

Scenes such as snow-covered roads in the Middle Atlas near underscore the diversity that sets Morocco apart from many competing destinations. Combined with its medinas, coastal cities, desert regions, and rich intangible heritage, the country offers a layered travel experience that resonates with visitors seeking authenticity and variety.

As 2026 approaches, Morocco’s growing visibility in US travel forecasts points to sustained international interest and reinforces its position as a destination that continues to surprise, even for seasoned travelers looking beyond the usual paths.
