Marrakech – Spain’s outbound travel market is quietly reshaping global tourism patterns, and Morocco stands out as a clear leader among non-European destinations, according to a recent report by Office National Marocain du Tourisme (ONMT).

In 2025, Morocco confirmed its position as the preferred African country for Spanish travelers thanks to its proximity, cultural richness, and diversity of experiences.

Spaniards are increasingly experience-driven, seeking cultural city breaks, adventure, and beach destinations that offer both novelty and convenience.

Spain’s population surpassed 49 million last year, driven by a younger and more mobile demographic with strong international connections.

Economic confidence supports this travel trend, with a GDP of 1.59 trillion euros in 2024, a growth of 3.5%, unemployment stabilized at 10.45%, and inflation around 3%.

This financial stability allows Spaniards to travel more frequently and spend more on curated experiences.

Spanish travelers are staying longer, averaging eight nights per trip, and spending roughly 1,008 euros per journey. Planning is deliberate, often beginning five months in advance.

Travel decisions are influenced by a mix of personal recommendations, online research, and traditional agencies.

Friends and family remain the most trusted sources, followed by agency websites and reviews.

Booking behavior is hybrid, with many travelers booking directly while others rely on agencies.

For Morocco, this trend represents a significant opportunity. The country has been expanding air connectivity with direct flights from Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, and other regions, making travel planning easier.

Morocco’s cities and regions offer a variety of experiences, from the bustling markets and historic medinas of Marrakech and Fes to the beaches of Agadir and Essaouira, and the desert landscapes of Merzouga. Each destination caters to different traveler interests, allowing for long-stay itineraries and immersive cultural experiences.

As Spain becomes more experience-driven and culturally curious, Morocco is well-positioned to capture this growing market.

Integrated marketing campaigns emphasizing culture and storytelling, combined with multi-channel distribution across agencies and digital platforms, can attract Spanish travelers early in their planning cycle.

With proximity, convenience, and rich offerings, Morocco continues to solidify its role as Spain’s top destination outside Europe, making it a strategic focal point for tourism growth in North Africa.
