Fez — During his recent visit to Morocco, popular American streamer iShowSpeed made a culinary stop in Casablanca that quickly turned into one of the trip’s most talked-about moments, as he sampled traditional Moroccan dishes and praised the country’s food culture with characteristic enthusiasm.
The visit took place at La Sqala, a well-known restaurant located inside the walls of an old Portuguese fort near Casablanca’s historic medina.
As iShowSpeed arrived, he was welcomed at the entrance with live Gnawa music, setting a festive tone that reflected the restaurant’s blend of history, culture, and cuisine.
A warm welcome and first impressions
Inside, the streamer met the restaurant’s owners and staff, who invited him to experience what they described as the best of Moroccan cuisine. The visit began, as tradition dictates, with mint tea. The ritual immediately left an impression.
“I’m a tea person, bro. Morocco probably got the best tea,” iShowSpeed said, before learning how to pour it the Moroccan way, lifting the teapot high to create foam and enhance the flavor.
From pastilla to tagine
The tasting continued with chicken pastilla rolls, which iShowSpeed praised for their sweet-and-savory balance, combining spiced chicken with delicate pastry. He then moved on to fish briouates, another staple of Moroccan starters, before trying a beef tagine cooked with caramelized prunes.
While he appreciated the richness of the beef and prune tagine, he admitted a preference for chicken tagine.
The food journey also included a smoothie made from milk, almonds, and dates — a traditional blend that added a refreshing contrast to the heavier dishes.
At one point, reacting to the sheer variety and richness of the food, iShowSpeed summed up the experience with a line that quickly became the centerpiece of the visit: “Bro, if I live here, I’ll be fat.”
Moroccan cuisine’s global reputation
During the meal, one of the people accompanying him pointed out that celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has previously described Moroccan cuisine as the best in the world — a comment that echoed iShowSpeed’s growing appreciation as the dishes kept coming.
The visit ended with an assortment of Moroccan pastries, but one item stood out above all others. iShowSpeed repeatedly asked for more of the chicken pastilla rolls, making it clear they were his favorite part of the meal.
Food as cultural ambassador
Beyond the entertainment value, the visit offered a glimpse into how Moroccan cuisine often serves as a gateway to the country’s culture.
Set within a historic fort in Casablanca, accompanied by traditional music and guided by ritual hospitality, the experience highlighted how food, history, and performance come together in Morocco’s dining culture.
