Lugano – Vogue Arabia has spotlighted Morocco’s growing female surf community, emphasizing how women across the country’s Atlantic coastline are reshaping a traditionally male-dominated sport.
In its recent feature, the publication focused on the cultural and social shifts taking place within Morocco’s surf scene.
Surfing in Morocco has traditionally been more popular among men, however, more women are now getting into the dynamic sport.
At the forefront of this transformation is Maryam El Gardoum, a five-time national champion who began surfing at age 11 and became the country’s youngest surfing champion at 14.
Maryam El Gardoum’s career extends beyond Morocco, with the champion representing her country on the international stage, including appearances at the European Surfing Championships.
Empowering women through surf and community
Today, her work extends beyond competition.
In 2029 following a knee injury, El Gardoum established the Dihya Surf School, named after the Amazigh warrior queen, as a space dedicated not only to surfing, but to empowerment and community.
The school offers personalized surf experiences for all levels, from complete beginners to more advanced surfers, but its mission goes deeper than skill-building.
Through hands-on coaching and intentional community-building, El Gardoum has created a safe, supportive environment where women can step into the ocean with confidence, often for the very first time.
By bringing women together in the water, the school fosters a sense of belonging, independence, and shared strength, encouraging participants to challenge limitations and redefine what is possible.
At the same time, it offers an immersive experience of Morocco’s coastline and culture, allowing surfers to connect with both place and purpose, all while embracing the spirit of Dihya: bold, fearless, and free.
Morocco emerging as a global surf destination
Along Morocco’s Atlantic coastline, from Taghazout to Essaouira, a growing number of women are embracing surfing, building communities that foster both participation and visibility.
This rising interest is mirrored in increasing international recognition.
Taghazout was ranked among the top trending destinations for 2026 in the Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards, placing 13th globally.
The coastal town, just north of Agadir, has increasingly drawn attention for its vibrant surf culture, growing wellness tourism scene, and effortlessly relaxed seaside atmosphere, making it a sought-after destination for both surfers and travelers alike.
