Fez — Sony Pictures Entertainment and Pop Mart have officially confirmed a “Labubu” feature film, turning one of the world’s most recognizable collectible characters into a new screen franchise. The project is in early development and is set to combine live-action with CGI.

Paul King, the filmmaker behind “Paddington” and “Wonka,” is attached to direct and co-write the script. He will share writing duties with Steven Levenson, whose credits include “Dear Evan Hansen,” “tick, tick… BOOM!,” and “Fosse/Verdon.”

The announcement was made during the Paris stop of “The Monsters” global exhibition tour, which is marking the 10th anniversary of the franchise created by artist Kasing Lung. Lung, who first introduced Labubu through “The Monsters Trilogy” in 2015, will serve as executive producer on the film.

From collectible craze to movie franchise

The move reflects Pop Mart’s broader effort to turn Labubu from a retail hit into a long-term entertainment property. Reuters reported that the company sees the film as part of a wider expansion strategy built around content, licensing, and global brand growth.

That strategy follows Labubu’s rapid rise from art-toy favorite to mainstream pop-culture figure. The toothy, mischievous creature has become central to Pop Mart’s international growth, helped by the blind-box boom and an expanding fan base well beyond Asia. Recent coverage has described Labubu as one of the company’s most important intellectual properties, with Pop Mart using the character to deepen its push into overseas markets.

Producers on the film include King, Michael Schaefer, and Wenxin She, while Brittany Morrissey is overseeing the project for Sony Pictures. No release date, cast details, or plot information have been announced yet.
