Fez — Chuck Norris, the American martial artist and actor whose screen career and internet-era fame made him one of popular culture’s most recognizable tough-guy figures, has died at the age of 86. His family announced the news today saying he died yesterday surrounded by loved ones.

In a statement shared on Norris’s official Instagram page, his family described his death as a “sudden passing” and said he was at peace when he died.

They did not disclose the cause of death and asked for privacy as they mourn. Reuters and the Associated Press both reported that the family chose not to release further details about the circumstances.

Born Carlos Ray Norris on March 10, 1940, in Ryan, Oklahoma, Norris first rose to prominence through martial arts rather than acting.

After serving in the US Air Force and studying martial arts in South Korea, he went on to become a six-time undefeated World Professional Middleweight Karate champion. He later founded his own martial arts system, Chun Kuk Do, and built a reputation as both a competitor and instructor before moving into film.

From martial arts champion to screen star

Norris’ acting career grew steadily after he entered Hollywood, eventually turning him into a fixture of action cinema in the 1980s and 1990s. He starred in films including “Missing in Action,” “The Delta Force,” and “Code of Silence.” But his most enduring mainstream success came with the television series “Walker, Texas Ranger,” which ran from 1993 to 2001 and cemented his image as a moral, disciplined, and physically formidable hero.

His fame later evolved in an unexpected direction. In the 2000s, Norris became the subject of the viral “Chuck Norris Facts” meme phenomenon, which transformed his stern action-hero persona into a form of internet folklore. Rather than reject the joke, Norris largely embraced it, allowing a new generation to discover him not only as a martial arts icon and actor, but also as a pop-cultural symbol of exaggerated toughness.

Beyond film and television, Norris remained active in public life through writing, philanthropy, and political advocacy. He founded “Kickstart Kids,” a program aimed at teaching children discipline and self-respect through martial arts. In addition, he maintained a public identity shaped by faith and conservative activism. He is survived by his wife and five children.

Chuck Norris leaves behind a legacy that stretches far beyond action cinema. For some, he was a martial arts pioneer. For others, he was the face of a distinctly American screen hero. For millions online, he became a legend retold through jokes. These different layers of his experience-rich and accomplished life made him more than a celebrity. He was at heart a towering cultural figure whose image endured across generations.
