Safi – Imagine a gym where the only people in the room are women. No mirror posing, no hovering by the weights, no sense of being watched. For many, that’s precisely what makes women-only spaces appealing.

From gyms and studios to spas, they are one of the fastest-growing corners of the fitness world. The reason is not complicated: comfort.

Why are women choosing them?

Many women find mixed-gender gyms unwelcoming. A UK survey of more than a thousand gym-goers found that two in five women avoid them because men have made them feel uncomfortable. Three in five say they have been harassed at least once.

The complaints are specific: crowded machines, unsolicited advice and the sense of being watched in the free-weights corner

Remove the male audience, and for many women, so goes the pressure to be seen rather than simply work out.

The trend is reflected in the numbers. In many markets, women now account for more than half of all gym members, a significant shift from a decade ago.

At the same time, women-only fitness clubs have become one of the industry’s fastest-growing segments.

A women-only wellness space offers more than a place to exercise.

The strongest concepts bring together movement, nutrition, recovery, and community, recognizing that wellness doesn’t begin and end with a workout.

That approach is reflected in the programming. Classes are tailored to women’s fitness goals, while coaching is designed to support beginners as much as bodybuilders. Many clubs also offer  specialized programs for pregnancy and postpartum recovery.

This shift is happening worldwide. Women-only studios are expanding rapidly, particularly in fast-growing urban areas where many women are joining a gym for the first time.

Morocco’s growing scene

In Morocco, the appeal goes beyond comfort. Women-only gyms create a space for women who might not feel comfortable exercising in mixed-gender settings.

For some, it’s about privacy. For others, it’s rooted in faith, cultural values, or simply personal preference.

Most big Moroccan cities already have a women-only wellness space, and the list keeps growing.

In Casablanca, Zone Fitness in Bouskoura runs a floor that is entirely women-only.

MegaLady, also in Casablanca, is women-only, offering weight training, group classes, and a private pool.

In Marrakech, Premium Fitness Majorelle also offers a women-only fitness space, complemented by a swimming pool and jacuzzi.

Rabat and other Moroccan cities have also embraced the concept, with dedicated women-only gyms alongside traditional fitness clubs that reserve certain hours exclusively for women.

For many women, that sense of comfort is reason enough. Sometimes, the greatest luxury a wellness space can offer isn’t another machine or class, but the feeling of walking through a door and knowing you can simply be yourself.
