Casablanca – Lionsgate has unveiled the first teaser for “Day Drinker,” marking Johnny Depp’s return to a major Hollywood production ahead of the film’s March 26, 2027 release.
Starring Madelyn Cline and Penélope Cruz, the thriller follows a yacht bartender whose encounter with a mysterious passenger sets off a dangerous chain of events, drawing them into a world of crime, secrets, and betrayal.
A mysterious return
The teaser keeps much of the story under wraps, but it gives Depp a striking new look. With gray hair, a scruffy beard, and an unsettling presence, he plays a mysterious guest whose motives remain unclear.
“I’m done when I say I’m done,” Depp’s character says in the teaser, adding another layer of mystery to a film already playing with the idea of revenge, ghost stories, and hidden connections.
For Depp, the film carries significance beyond its thriller plot. “Day Drinker” ranks among his first major Hollywood-backed productions since his highly publicized defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard, which concluded in 2022.
The actor has continued working during the years since the trial, but mostly through international and independent productions.
He starred in the 2023 French historical drama “Jeanne du Barry,” which opened the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, and also continued performing with his music project, Hollywood Vampires.
“Day Drinker” now places him back inside a major Hollywood studio production.
Depp’s Hollywood comeback continues
“Day Drinker” follows another major Hollywood project in Depp’s return to studio filmmaking. He will first appear as Ebenezer Scrooge in Ti West’s “Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol,” set for release on November 13.
The dark fantasy gives Depp another very different role, while “Day Drinker” takes him into action-thriller territory, marking a busy return to major studio filmmaking after years away from Hollywood’s biggest productions.
A familiar face joins the mystery
“Day Drinker” also reunites Depp with Cruz for their fourth film together. The pair previously appeared in “Blow,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” and “Murder on the Orient Express.”
Cline, meanwhile, steps into the lead role as the yacht bartender at the center of the story. The film comes after the conclusion of “Outer Banks,” the Netflix series that made her widely known as Sarah Cameron.
For now, the teaser leaves plenty unanswered. But with Depp, Cruz, and Cline sharing the screen, “Day Drinker,” already has enough mystery to make audiences curious about what happens once the yacht sets sail.
