Rabat – Morocco’s tourism industry is experiencing a significant resurgence, with tourist arrivals surpassing 5.9 million by the end of May 2024, according to data from the Ministry of Tourism.

This marks a remarkable 15% increase compared to the same period last year.

This growth  extends beyond year-over-year comparisons. This May, Morocco’s tourism industry witnessed a remarkable performance, with over 1.3 million visitors entering the country. This translates to an impressive 18% increase compared to May 2023, showcasing a sustained upward trajectory.

The driving forces behind this resurgence are multifaceted. Foreign tourists, constituting a significant 56% of total arrivals, have displayed a renewed interest in Morocco. This is reflected in a 17% surge in foreign arrivals during the first five months of 2024.

Moroccans residing abroad have also played a role in this positive trend, with a 13% rise in visits compared to the same period last year. This highlights the enduring appeal of Morocco as a heritage destination for diaspora communities.

“The influx of an additional 772,000 tourists in just five months is a remarkable achievement for our tourism sector,” said Minister of Tourism Fatim-Zahra Ammor in a press release.

Minister Ammor commended the collaborative efforts that fueled this progress, stating, “We are incredibly proud of the progress made over the past 30 months, which is a testament to our collaborative efforts with industry professionals and partners.”

Looking towards the peak summer season, the minister expressed confidence. “We have meticulously planned promotions, air travel options, and hospitality experiences to ensure an exceptional experience for our visitors,” she noted. “The momentum in our tourism industry is undeniable, and we approach the future with unwavering determination.”

Morocco’s tourism industry, a cornerstone of the national economy, was significantly impacted by the global pandemic. The current resurgence signifies not just recovery, but a potential leap forward.

The strategic investments made by the ministry in recent years, including targeted marketing campaigns and improved infrastructure, appear to be yielding positive results.

The focus on promoting Morocco’s diverse offerings, from breathtaking landscapes and cultural heritage to vibrant cities and luxurious resorts, seems to be resonating with travelers worldwide.
