Created by incorporating the Province of Al Hoceima into the former Region of Tangier Tetouan, the region is currently composed of 146 communes spread over two prefectures (Tangier Asilah and M’diq FnideqFnideq), six provinces and two prefectures (Fahs Anjra and Tetouan).
