Fez — Moroccan fashion house New Tangier is presenting its latest caftan collection, “Re-Oriented,” at Le Doge in Casablanca today and tomorrow if Ramadan begins on the 19th. The showcase offers visitors a close look at a series that revisits the garment’s historic roots while embracing a distinctly modern aesthetic.
With “Re-Oriented,” designer Kenza Bennani turns to the origins of the Moroccan caftan, drawing inspiration from silk brocades adorned with rich floral motifs. The collection explores fabrics reminiscent of those that traveled along the Silk Road, reconnecting the caftan to its early influences and layered history.
The pieces place strong emphasis on material. Lustrous silks and intricate brocades take center stage, allowing texture and craftsmanship to define the silhouettes. The overall effect is one of subtle luxury, where refinement replaces excess and heritage is expressed through detail rather than ornament.
Ottoman and Andalusian lines, refined
The cuts remain faithful to classical Ottoman and Andalusian forms, preserving the elongated lines and structured elegance traditionally associated with the caftan. However, the designs avoid heavy embellishment, opting instead for clean finishes that highlight the richness of the textiles.
Alongside the caftans, the collection includes reimagined jabadors transformed into minimalist jackets. These structured pieces create an interplay between sobriety and opulence, pairing understated tailoring with sumptuous fabrics. The contrast brings a contemporary rhythm to garments rooted in centuries of tradition.
The title “Re-Oriented” reflects a deliberate return to source material and aesthetic codes historically linked to the East, reinterpreted for today’s wearer. The collection frames the caftan not only as ceremonial attire, but as a flexible garment capable of evolving with changing tastes and lifestyles.
A historic backdrop for a timeless garment
The collection was recently photographed at Dar Dmana, a 1901 residence of the Cherif family of Ouazzane. The building’s zellige floors, carved woodwork, and horseshoe arches echo the collection’s dialogue between architectural heritage and modern design.
Presented within the refined setting of Le Doge in Casablanca, the exhibition situates New Tangier within Morocco’s contemporary luxury landscape. The brand continues to explore how traditional craftsmanship can be preserved while adapting to new expressions of elegance.
