Casablanca – Ramadan is a month of tradition, reflection, and of course, delicious ftour meals. Soups hold a special place on the table, comforting and nourishing.

For many, the evening starts with familiar flavors like harira, the must-have Moroccan delicacy. But after a few days, our taste buds crave something new – a little twist on the classics.

This creamy potato and sweet potato soup is exactly that: simple, hearty, and slightly different, while still keeping the warmth and comfort we love in our iftar bowls.

Hear me out: the magic in this recipe is in the sweet potato. It’s the ingredient that adds irresistible charm, especially if it’s the sweet, orange-fleshed variety.

The natural sweetness of sweet potatoes balances the earthy potatoes, and a touch of cream makes it silky and indulgent without being heavy. Add a sprinkle of cheese or a dash of garlic powder, and it becomes a cozy treat everyone at the table will enjoy.

Roll up your sleeves and let’s prepare this cozy treat.

Ingredients

1 onion, chopped

2 potatoes, peeled and diced

3 sweet potatoes, peeled and diced

1 liter boiled water

½ cup cream (adjust to taste)

Salt, pepper, and garlic powder to taste

Cheese (optional)

Instructions

  • Sauté the onion in a pot with a little oil and/or butter until soft and fragrant.
  • Add the potatoes and sweet potatoes, stir briefly, then pour in the boiled water. Simmer until the vegetables are tender, about 20–25 minutes.
  • Blend the soup until smooth using an immersion blender or countertop blender.
  • Stir in the cream, season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Heat gently without boiling.
  • Serve hot, with cheese if desired.
