Rabat – Moroccan destinations, including Fez stand out as the best must-visit places, drawing millions of visitors annually.

Many travel websites and magazines have consistently shed light on Morocco’s impressive destinations, including Tripadvisor, which named Fez among the best cultural destinations for 2024.

According to an overview of the city of Fez, also spelled as Fes, the travel website celebrated the city as the host of the oldest university in the world.

The overview emphasized that the oldest university in the world isn’t Oxford or the Sorbonne.

“It’s the University of Al-Kraouine [sic].”

Emphasizing the city’s importance, the website cited the Fez inscription among UNESCO World Heritage sites.

“This walled city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will transport you back to medieval times,” the website wrote while recommending a visit to the “ancient maze-life quarters of the Medina to Fes el-Bali and the four imposing Gates of Fes, with their distinctive Moroccan tile work.”

According to Tripadvisor, culture trips remain popular, stressing that data from the website’s Seasonal Travel Index shows that 25% of Americans plan cultural sightseeing trips in the coming months.

For culture enthusiasts, Fez is one of the destinations that captivate tourists‘ attention, as the city is home to milestone historic landmarks and cultural aspects – including handicrafts.

Notably, Fez alone boasts 80,000 artisan workshops employing around 200,000 individuals, representing 30% of the city’s labor force.

The artisanal sector holds a vital place in Morocco’s economy, employing 2.4 million people.

Morocco’s sector achieved a record-breaking $100 million by the end of November 2023, marking a significant 7% increase from the same period in 2022.

Tripadvisor also featured Morocco among the best destinations to visit in 2024.

Head of Editorial at Tripadvisor Sarah Firshein said that 94% of Americans are planning to travel as much if not more than last year.

“Winners like Dubai, Tokyo, Paris, and Marrakech indicate that our community has an unbridled appetite for destinations with vibrant arts-and-culture scenes, top-notch restaurants, and seemingly limitless attractions and experiences,” she said.
