Casablanca – Meta has announced that Messenger.com will no longer be available on desktop starting April 16, while the mobile app will remain active.
Users who access Messenger on a computer will need to log in through a Facebook account to continue using their messages on desktop. This change may be especially inconvenient for those who prefer using a computer, no longer have or use a Facebook account, yet continue to rely on Messenger for their daily messages.
After this date, anyone trying to visit messenger.com on a computer will be automatically redirected to messages on Facebook.com. This change means that desktop users will need an active Facebook account to send or receive messages through a web browser.
Previously, Messenger.com allowed users to log in using just their phone number without a Facebook profile. The move is part of Meta’s effort to consolidate and simplify its messaging services and reduce duplication across its platforms.
The company has not announced any changes to the Messenger mobile app, which remains fully operational on iOS and Android. Users can continue to send texts, make voice and video calls, share media, and use all existing features on their phones or tablets.
In this context, the company advises users to restore their conversations before the shutdown date to avoid any disruption. For now, the mobile app remains the recommended way to use Messenger without a Facebook account.
