Rabat – Four Moroccan film productions have been nominated to compete at the 2022 Malmo Arab Film Festival (MAFF) in Sweden, scheduled to take part from May 4 to 9.
“Life Suits Me Well” by Moroccan-French film director Al Hadi Ulad Mohand appears in the feature fiction category, while the documentary category features “Femmes Suspendues (Suspended Wives)” by Moroccan film director Meriem Addou.
Al Hadi Ulad Mohand’s film is a tragic story of a young man whose life is disrupted by a neurological disease. The director narrates the love, sorrow, and memories of the protagonist and his family.
Meanwhile, Addou’s film sheds light on the daily struggles of three women and the lengthy and absurd process for them to get a divorce, while highlighting Moroccan society’s prejudices and other social issues.
“Ashes” by Moroccan director Mustapha Farmati and “Tender Threads” by Ouijdane Khallid are competing in the short films category.
The organizing committee revealed “Daughters of Abdulrahman” by Jordanian director Zaid Abu Hamdan to be the opening film for the 2022 festival.
The Egyptian film “Hamel El Lakab” by director Hisham Fathy will be screened at the closing ceremony.
The 2022 competition line-up features 56 productions – 31 feature and 25 short films – from 14 Arab countries and co-produced by 10 Western countries.
Egyptian award-winning films such as “Abo Saddam” by Nadine Khan, “Souad” by Ayten Amin, “From Cairo” by Hala Galal, and “Captains of Zaatari” by Ali El Arabi are also participating in the competition.
The selected films will be screened in Malmo as well as in other Swedish cities, according to MAFF.
“Malmo is returning to be an annual meeting point, where Arab filmmakers meet their counterparts from Sweden and the Nordic countries, forming a unique window for cooperation between the two sides,” said Mouhamad Keblawi, founder and president of MAFF.
