Rabat – Morocco’s Post Office has issued a new series of stamps containing pictures and names of three iconic Moroccan women.
The initiative is part of the office’s celebration of the International Women’s Day, according to state-owned news agency MAP.
The Post Office honored Soraya Alshawi, the first female pilot in the Arab and Islamic world.
Alshawi was also the youngest woman in the world to pass the aviation competence exam. She piloted an aircraft when she was only 16 years old, after receiving her aviation certificate in 1951.
The post office also celebrated Fatima Mernissi, who was known for focusing on various social studies, most notably civil society, democracy, and the digital revolution. She was also previously ranked among the Guardian’s list of the top 100 most influential women in the world of 2011.
The list also includes Malika El Fassi, a Moroccan writer and nationalist. She was also the only woman to sign the Declaration of Independence on January 11, 1944.
