Rabat – Marrakech has the most sustainable hotels in North Africa and features in the top 20 cities worldwide with the most sustainable stays, according to a recent study by Uswitch, a UK-based website that analyzes trends in the energy and sustainability sectors.
Uswitch’s energy comparison experts conducted a study to analyze the green credentials of thousands of hotels around the world to identify cities that offer the most sustainable stays.
In a press release, Uswitch said that the team analyzed hotels in the world’s 200 largest cities on Booking.com by using the “sustainable” filter to discover how many eco-conscious hotels exist in each country.
In Morocco, Uswitch analyzed 1710 hotels in Marrakech, noting that 16.08% of hotels in the ochre city are certified as sustainable on the booking website, equivalent to 275 hotels in total.
Marrakech ranks 19th as the best holiday destination that offers a sustainable holiday to visitors.
Meanwhile Casablanca ranks 48 worldwide. Out of 425 hotels available on booking, 49 are recognized for their eco-efforts (11.53%).
Marrakech is first in North Africa, followed by Cairo (24th worldwide) with 15% of its hotels recognized as eco-friendly.
No hotels in Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya figure in the top 50 to be recognized as sustainable.
Four Canadian cities figure in the top 5, with Vancouver being the first city worldwide for sustainable hotel stays. Nearly 44% of all hotels in Vancouver are recognised for their sustainability efforts.
On the booking website, out of 89 hotels in Vancouver, 39 have been awarded the sustainable badge.
The Swedish city Stockholm comes second with 40% of its hotels being environmentally friendly. The city was named Europe’s first European Green Capital in 2010 and is considered as an international role model for climate action.
Canadian cities Toronto, Calgary, and Edmonton occupy the 3rd, 4th, and 5th ranking respectively.
Also in the top 10 are the cities of Lahore in Pakistan, Medellin and Bogota in Colombia, and Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg in South Africa.
Meanwhile Antananarivo (Madagascar) and Madurai (India) are at the bottom of the ranking, 49th and 50th respectively.
