Rabat – Nordic Film Week opened Monday evening at Cinéma Le 7ème Art in Rabat with Finnish drama “Maja,” taking viewers to a remote island in the 19th century, where a young woman faces the hardships of isolated life while finding her own path.

Running from October 26 to 29, the festival brings films from Finland, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden to Moroccan audiences, offering a chance to discover the region’s landscapes, climate, and cultural traditions through stories shaped by the lives of its people.

The ambassadors of the four Nordic countries attended the opening screening. Their embassies organized this year’s edition under the theme “Arctic Horizons,” which explores the realities of life in the region and the challenges facing its communities.

A woman’s struggle for independence

Directed by Tiina Lymi, “Maja” follows a young woman who enters a marriage against her will before gradually building a life of her own with her fisherman husband.

Set against the isolation of a remote island, the film captures the demands of family life and the difficulties of living in an environment where nature shapes everyday survival.

As Maja faces these challenges, she learns to navigate her circumstances and find strength in a life she did not initially choose.

Beyond its intimate portrayal of one woman’s journey, the film offers a window into the historical realities of island communities, where isolation and harsh living conditions shaped people’s experiences and choices.

For Moroccan audiences, the screening also provides an opportunity to experience a landscape and way of life far removed from their own, while discovering the human struggles and resilience that connect people across cultures.

Four evenings of Nordic cinema

Following “Maja,” the program continues Tuesday with Norwegian documentary “Folktales,” followed by Greenlandic film “Inuk” on Wednesday. Swedish documentary “Historjá – Stitches for Sápmi” will close the festival on Thursday.

Organized by the embassies of Finland, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden in Morocco, Nordic Film Week offers four evenings of cinema that explore the region’s people, traditions, and relationship with the natural world.

All screenings begin at 6:30 p.m. at Cinéma Le 7ème Art, with free admission subject to seat availability.
