Rabat – Moroccan-French opera singer, actor, director, and producer David Serero announced the upcoming launch of the first opera company in Morocco, in an interview with the news channel M24.
The opera company was reportedly founded in partnership with Moroccan authorities and is set to launch on November 30.
The company aims to incorporate Moroccan customs, values, and attire to produce an opera with a Moroccan flair and give priority to Moroccan performers.
The company also plans to train aspiring Moroccan opera singers to perform celebrated and well-known pieces.
The dearth of operas in the Moroccan art scene has pushed Serero to launch the company to develop and promote the art of opera in the country.
“Morocco has an ancestral vocal tradition, but there is no opera company in Morocco,” Serero told M24.
Serero emphasized the significance of producing opera in Darija with Moroccan themes and stories to captivate the “rich” sound of the Moroccan dialect.
Morocco’s music scene is gearing up to renew cultural activities, including a variety of music festivals, now that COVID-19 restrictions are being pulled back.
In February, Morocco’s ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication launched a new initiative to support cultural and artistic projects. The initiative focuses on music, theater, and choreography, particularly musical and lyrical production.
Earlier this year, National Geographic highlighted Morocco’s music scene with a ranking of the country’s six best music festivals.
The festivals listed in the ranking were the Transahara Festival, Rabat’s Mawazine Festival, Fez’s World Sacred Music Festival, Essaouira’s Gnawa World Music Festival, Oasis Festival, and Casablanca’s Jazzablanca Festival.
