Rabat – Ifrane has secured the top spot on the list of “10 Charming Towns and Cities in Africa Worth Visiting,” in a recent ranking published by renowned travel website The Travel.
Often referred to as the “Switzerland of Morocco,” Ifrane’s charm lies in its location in the Atlas Mountain range, where it sees snowfall throughout the winter season.
“Skip Casablanca and other larger cities in Morocco to visit Ifrane – the cold part of the country. The charming town is also known as the Switzerland of Morocco, as it is located at an elevation of 1,650 meters (5,400 feet), and it snows all winter,” the travel magazine wrote.
Noting the town’s numerous attractions for tourists, the travel magazine adds that “although it is also exciting to visit in the summer, Ifrane is particularly exciting during winter as it is home to Michlifen resort & Golf, which is equipped with Alpine ski runs and lifts.”
“In addition to its winter appeal, Ifrane is full of stunning colonial architecture as it was built to be a French Alpine village,” the report adds.
Built in the 1920s, Ifrane was intended to serve as a summer resort for French administrators from the Moroccan summer heat.
It also doubled as a ski resort for winter holidays. Currently, the town houses a world-class winter ski resort. In the 1970s, Ifrance became a provincial government town.
