Casablanca – Art gallery L’Atelier 21 in Casablanca will host a remarkable exhibition by Derrick Ofosu Boateng titled “Moroccan Mosaic: A Journey into Hueism.” 

This event – Boateng’s first in the gallery –  coincides with the 3rd edition of the Night of Museums and Cultural Spaces, providing art lovers and collectors a unique opportunity to experience his vibrant works.

The artist and his vision

Derrick Ofosu Boateng,  just 26 years old, is already recognized as one of Africa’s most promising and creative photographers. 

Born and based in Accra, Ghana, Boateng has become famous with his innovative approach known as “Hueism” This artistic movement, that Boateng founded, focuses on color therapy and visual poetry, offering an energetic approach on African life. 

His photographs, taken with an iPhone and digitally enhanced, stand out for their vivid colors and the ability to capture the essence of everyday life with a touch of fantasy and uniqueness.

Boateng’s journey in Morocco

The exhibition unveils the experiences Boateng had during his time living in Morocco, where he photographed lots of Gnaoua musicians in Essaouira and Casablanca. These meetings inspired a new series of photographs, presented in his exhibition.

 In the exhibition’s catalog, Olivier Ratchet – author, teacher in modern literature and cinema-audiovisual studies and freelance journalist- said this series reflects the Akan proverbs that influenced the artist’s culture.

Boateng’s photos make interesting connections between different commonplace items, like watermelons and red hats, or footballs and oranges in plastic bags, creating a fun and new visual experience.

By juxtapozing elements like fruits and flowers in unexpected ways, Boateng not only captures his audience’s attention but also invites them to explore deeper cultural and symbolic meanings within his art. 

This unique combination makes his work fun and visually exciting, and offers a fresh and playful experience for viewers.

Opening night

The exhibition’s opening night is set for Friday, June 21, starting at 6 p.m. and ending at midnight.
