The ministry announced today that religious authorities confirmed the non-visibility of the crescent moon. This means that Ramadan will begin on Sunday in Morocco.

Contrary to Morocco, several countries are celebrating the first day of Ramadan on Saturday, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and UAE.

Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar; it is a spiritual occasion when Muslims fast from dawn to sunset.

During the fasting hours, Moroccans abstained from drinking, eating, and chewing gums.

Taking medications is also not allowed. People with chronic diseases are not encouraged to fast per medical prescription.

Children who have not reached puberty are also exempt from fasting but families often encourage their children to fast for a few days to experience the holy month.

The atmosphere of Ramadan is completely a new experience for foreigners and people who never lived in Morocco before.

The streets turn into a calm place during the day but at night, Moroccans flock in tens of thousands or millions to mosques across the country to perform Taraweeh, extra prayers performed during the holy month.

If visitors are not particularly fond of  calm, they can also experience the souks’ vibes during the day. Moroccan streets and avenues are also special during the holy month as every house and every street smells delicious.

Every house turns into a “master chef” studio, where the best dishes are prepared for the iftar.

Iftar tables are frequently adorned with different dishes, with main courses being harira soup, batbout bread, chebakia, and savory food like stuffed msmen, batbout, and briouat or mini bastila.
