Today, the Cervantes Institute in Rabat is opening its doors to the IX Spanish Cinema Festival. The event, which is free and open to the public, will run until  May 26th, and it will feature 12 of the most significant films in the world of productions of Spanish-language cinema made in the past few years around the world.

The festival, which dates back to 2015, is a collaboration between the Cervantes Institute and various Hispanic American embassies in Morocco, including Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, El Salvador, Spain, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic, and Venezuela.

The event is poised not only to boost the bilateral relations between the countries involved but also contribute to cultural exchange, strengthening ties between Morocco and South America.

In a deeper cultural sense, the festival will also help promote academic partnerships, learning, and overall promote the use of the Spanish language and spread Hispanic cultures abroad.

The institute will be showing a Mexican film at the opening titled “‘La Vida en Gris”’, by Mexican director and filmmaker Josian López.

It tells the story of a man named Ray, who is capable of living different versions of himself in parallel universes, but when they converge, he discovers the road to redemption, love and happiness.

This movie, alongside the other films that will be projected, helps to represent the hard-working Hispanic American and Spanish directors who do not get the recognition that they deserve. Yet Morocco’s Cervantes Institute is helping fight these injustices and expand Hispanic and Spanish culture, with this film festival serving as a formidable step.
