Rabat – Judge Frank Caprio, affectionately known as “the nicest judge in the world,” has passed away peacefully at age 88 following a tough fight with pancreatic cancer. For nearly 40 years, he presided over the Providence Municipal Court, not with stern robes, but with warm humor and genuine empathy.
In a video shared on Caprio’s official Instagram account, his son, David Caprio, asked, “In his memory please spread a little kindness today, I know he would love that.”
His fame extended far beyond the courtroom. “Caught in Providence,” is the viral reality show that showcased his humane responses to minor offenses, and shot him into global stardom.
Viewers saw him ease the burden for struggling parents, joke with college students, and sometimes dismiss parking tickets altogether, all with a jovial twinkle and genuine sense of care.
Just one day before his passing Caprio reached out from his hospital bed, sharing a heartfelt message and asking his 3.4 million followers for their prayers, his devotion still shining through.
Rhode Island responded with respect and sorrow. Governor Dan McKee called Caprio “a Rhode Island treasure” and ordered flags flown at half-mast in his honor. Thousands joined the mourning online, remembering not just a judge, but a man who made justice feel human again.
Beyond his TV kindness, Caprio’s lifelong devotion to his community reverberated through his work. He founded scholarships, supported local charities, and believed deeply in access to justice for all.
He leaves behind a legacy far richer than any ruling: a belief that small acts of kindness can drive profound change. As fans, family, and fellow Rhode Islanders mourn a beloved figure, the best way to honor him may be simple: to carry forward that gentle brand of justice with heart.
