Fez — Moroccan designers are prominently featured among the finalists of the first “Prix de la mode du monde arabe,” launched this year by the Institut du monde arabe (IMA) in Paris.
The award, the first of its kind in France, aims to celebrate the creativity of designers from the Arab world and its diasporas. Winners will be announced on October 8 during Paris Fashion Week.
The initiative comes as the IMA seeks to address the underrepresentation of Arab fashion in France, and to counter cultural clichés.
A jury of industry figures, including journalist Yaffa Assouline, entrepreneur Youness Bouchida, fashion academic Leyla Neri, and artist Majida Khattari, selected finalists in two categories: “Talent émergent” and “Talent innovant.”
Moroccan emerging voices
Three Moroccan names stand out in the “Talent émergent” category.
Mina Binebine’s label is known for its ethical and sustainable approach, reimagining Moroccan textiles with refined modernity while prioritizing environmental responsibility.
Yasmine Azizi, founder of “AYT Studio” in Paris, develops women’s ready-to-wear collections in collaboration with contemporary artists, producing limited editions that merge fashion and art.
Sophia Kacimi, based in London, founded the label “Zoubida,” which experiments with Moroccan craftsmanship, transforming traditional jacquard fabrics into wearable artworks.
Established innovators
In the “Talent innovant” category, Moroccan-Dutch couturier Mohamed Benchellal is among the finalists. Recognized internationally for his sculptural gowns and sustainable practices, Benchellal has dressed celebrities and royals and received major industry awards.
Other Moroccan names include the duo Hamza Guelmouss and Valentin Nicot of “Khol,” who reinterpret feminine wardrobe staples with artistic precision; Ines Slaoui, co-founder of “Selhyan,” a Paris-based caftan brand blending Moroccan heritage with modern trends; and Meriem Nour, founder of “Hanout Boutique” in Marrakech, whose collections transform traditional elements such as “sfifa” and “kilim”, into contemporary pieces.
Morocco’s rising profile
Morocco’s strong presence in both categories highlights its increasing influence in the global fashion industry.
The mix of diaspora designers and local brands calls attention to the country’s ability to bridge tradition and innovation. For the IMA, the prize also serves as cultural diplomacy, positioning Arab creativity on the international stage.
The October ceremony at the IMA is expected to draw international fashion leaders and further reinforce Morocco’s place at the forefront of Arab fashion.
