Marrakech – Today, in India, the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, approved Morocco’s submission to inscribe the Moroccan caftan as a part of the Organization’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

This international recognition crowns the efforts of the Kingdom of Morocco under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, who has long placed a high priority on preserving Moroccan culture and safeguarding the nation’s cultural heritage.

Morocco submitted a comprehensive file highlighting the richness and evolution of the cultural heritage associated with the caftan.

The file was meticulously prepared with the participation of the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication, as well as Morocco’s Permanent Delegation to UNESCO in Paris.

The Moroccan caftan is a living symbol of Moroccan identity, passed down from mother to daughter and from master to apprentice for over eight centuries.

The Ministry of Culture said this recognition marks a “new achievement for the Kingdom under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, who continues to give great attention to Moroccan culture and the protection of national heritage.”

With this international recognition, the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication extends its gratitude to all Moroccan artisans and traditional craftsmen for their dedication, as well as to civil society both in Morocco and abroad for their tireless advocacy in preserving Moroccan cultural heritage.
