Fez — Morocco is participating in the 16th edition of the Arab Theater Festival, currently underway in Cairo from January 10 to 16, with two theatrical works that highlight the richness of the national stage and the aesthetic and intellectual plurality of Moroccan creators.

Morocco is represented through “Widows F,” produced by the Art Friends troupe and written and directed by Ahmed Amine Sahel, alongside “Economic Citizen,” staged by Mohtaraf El Feddane Theatre, written by Ahmed Sebia and directed by Mahmoud Chahdi. Both productions combine formal experimentation with engagement in contemporary social and political questions.

“Widows F” explores marginal spaces through a symbolic and experimental theatrical language, focusing on women’s experiences within a virtual carceral setting. The production draws on an innovative stage vocabulary that blends spoken word and music, positioning aesthetic research at the center of its dramaturgical approach.

“Economic Citizen,” meanwhile, examines the relationship between artistic practice, political belonging, and national symbols. The work reflects on civic responsibility and collective engagement, using drama as a tool to provoke reflection on the social role of artists and citizens alike.

In addition to the two performances, Morocco is also strongly represented in the festival’s intellectual program, with Moroccan theater critics and researchers taking part in the colloquia and discussions scheduled throughout the event.

The Moroccan delegation brings together emerging and established artistic voices, spanning directing, acting, scenography, criticism, and academic research.

The 16th Arab Theater Festival brings together productions from ten Arab countries within a program that includes a competitive selection of fifteen theatrical works, a series of intellectual encounters, and a forum dedicated to puppetry arts.

The festival will conclude on January 16 with the announcement of the recipient of the Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi Award for Best Theatrical Production.
