Rabat – Selena Gomez, who was longtime best friends with Taylor Swift, has revealed that she served as inspiration for several of the pop superstar’s songs.
Appearing on the Friends Keep Secrets podcast alongside her husband Benny Blanco, Gomez confirmed fan suspicions that one of Swift’s tracks from the Evermore album was about her.
She also revealed that Swift wrote another song about their friendship that remains unreleased.
“‘Dorothea’ is about me. There’s also a song she wrote about us called ‘Family.’ It’s basically about having these amazing dreams, you want to be in movies—and how she could still see me in every crowd,” Gomez said.
“In the part about her, she talks about believing in my silly dreams, like singing in stadiums. Now, listening to that song, it’s amazing to see that both of those things have come true for each of us. That was such a sweet thing at the time, she just said, ‘I wrote this song about us.’ It was our story.”
“Dorothea,” released in 2020 on Swift’s “Evermore” album, peaked at No. 67 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The song tells the story of an old friend who achieved fame through “selling dreams, makeup, and magazines” and is now only seen through a “tiny screen.”
Fans long speculated that Gomez, founder of Rare Beauty and a film actress, was the real-life inspiration.
Gomez reflected on how their relationship shaped the songs, recalling that they met as teenagers.
“A lot of the big moments that shaped who we were, from relationships to family, love, even hate, we discovered together,” Gomez highlighted.
“I was fifteen and she was eighteen. We didn’t really know what was happening, so we never looked at each other differently. Listening to the songs now, I really admire how elegantly she captures all of that.”
She also shared a personal touch from Swift: a custom painting made for Gomez’s 30th birthday, depicting their zodiac signs illuminating a lakeside scene.
Blanco admitted he initially thought it was painted by a professional artist.
