Casablanca – Moroccan singer and guitarist Jbara returns with a fresh release titled “Lala Malika – Marvel With Me,” reimagining Gnawa through a modern, contemporary lens.
Composed and arranged by Jbara himself, the track unfolds with a layered identity, blending Moroccan heritage with a refined, contemporary sound.
Performed entirely in English, the song keeps one strong cultural anchor in its title, “Lala Malika,” which translates to “Madam Malika.” In Moroccan tradition, “Lalla” is a respectful title often used when addressing or referring to a woman of stature or age.
Musically, the track opens into a dialogue between two worlds of sound, where the guembri (a traditional three-stringed bass instrument) and guitar do not sit apart but gently fold into one another.
The guembri, performed by Ayoub Elayady, carries a deep, steady resonance that feels grounding and ancestral. On the same rhythm, Jbara’s guitar slips in and out of that pulse with fluid melodic lines that stretch the texture rather than contrast it.
Together, they create a soundscape that feels continuous rather than layered, as if both instruments are tracing the same emotional thread from different angles.
The visual world of the video clip adds another layer to the experience, with colors and atmospheres that mirror the song’s mood and elevate its overall aesthetic.
A fluid dialogue between heritage and modernity
And this is where Jbara’s identity becomes even more defined. His approach is rooted in fusion, where Moroccan musical heritage meets contemporary sound in a seamless, almost instinctive way.
Drawing from Gnawa, Sahraoui, Andalusi, Raï, Chaabi, acoustic, and rock influences, he brings these styles together into a single musical language rather than separate genres. The result is a body of work that feels rooted in tradition while constantly exploring new, modern directions.
With “Lalla Malika,” Jbara continues to shape a musical identity that feels both rooted and exploratory, where tradition is not preserved in stillness but carried forward through reinterpretation.
The track sits comfortably in that in-between space he often inhabits, where heritage and modernity meet without resistance, resulting in a sound that feels familiar yet newly imagined.
